Regional food at its best – The Masala Trail by Osama Jalali

Growing up in India, we cannot deny our love for the street food! We are fortunate that every state has its own cuisine and food varies from region to region, leaving us with endless options. An integral part of Indian culture, ‘street food’ constitutes to approx. 45% of the Indian food market share (ref. SMART advisors). It is highly popular amongst majority of the population from all walks of life due to its ‘authentic’ vibe. Let’s be honest if we want the real taste of food from any particular region, street food is the first thing that comes to our mind. It’s the vegetarian street food which scores over non-vegetarian street food in our country. At least 31% of Indian population eats only vegetarian food whereas almost 99% of the population relish the vegetarian delicacies provided by the street food vendors of a particular state.

What if I tell you that you can find everything I mentioned above under one roof which is not only superior quality but is also hygienic! I am talking about the Masala Trail by Osama Jalal! It is a pure vegetarian restaurant which offers hygienic, traditional food served at its best with dishes from every nook and corner of the country. The menu is impeccably chosen by the man – Osama Jalali himself who is one of the renowned epicureans of India. At his restaurant, you will find a very unique collection of handpicked dishes on the menu which we all have had while growing up. The traditional food has almost faded away in the limelight of the modern Indian and International cuisine, especially amongst the younger generation. TMT by Osama Lalali, is not only a sincere effort to keep the tradition going but also to bring these traditional gems to the mass population.

The dishes like Bihari Lithi Chokha, Rajasthani Dal Baati Choorma, Gujrati Panki & Dabeli, Amratsari chola kulcha , Karnataka Akki Roti  etc. delivers flavors of their respective regions, only to take you back to your childhood. I was also impressed by the interiors of the place which are well thought as per the theme. The huge hand painted wall which depicts the diverse culture of our rich Indian heritage is also a noteworthy aspect about the place.

A perfect family restaurant, where one can enjoy different regional cuisines in its authentic form, TMT by Osama Jalali has all my check boxes ticked when I visited for the food review for Martini On Heels.

Food Review: Choco Pizza by Dominos

We have had all sorts of pizzas with various toppings but the basic ingredients have always remained the same. For one its recipes, Dominos has chosen to go the non-traditional way, and has broken all the barriers of what pizza usually is all about that is namely cheese, passata, vegetables or meat.

Desserts will have a new perspective now as what Dominos has on offer is the most deadly combination for food lovers around the world! A Combination of Pizza and Chocolate is not less than a ‘choco treat’ from Dominos for all the chocolate lovers, and what better one could have asked for during the festive season? A trip to this sin city offers you an every chance of indulgence in the most delectable combination of flavours that one could have ever imagined- ‘choco brownie’, ‘choco cookie’, ‘cheesecake’ and ‘nougatine’ which is again topped with oodles of ‘chocolate sauce’ and ‘white choco chips’. It’s a thin, crispy, wheat crust base pizza that will make every bite into it all worth it as it has all the awesomeness of chocolaty love for the pizza lovers. I know, you guys are smiling like a Cheshire cat as this news has given you every reason to do that, right?

What made my taste buds tingle @ Zodiac by Fortune Select Excalibur?

Being an Indian, our love for street food can never diminish. India is so diverse that even street food varies from region to region, and no wonder, it has a special place in our hearts! Recently, Martini on Heels, was invited to have a taste of an elaborate spread of the street food by Zodiac restaurant at Fortune Select Excalibur. What if I tell you that you get to taste not only the Indian Street food but street food culinary from other countries as well? Yes, you heard me right! And, what better than having a lavish spread of street food which is hygienically prepared at a fine dining restaurant, for a change?

Starting from Kolkatta’s ‘Jhal Muri’, Bihar’s ‘Litti Chokha’, Bengal’s ‘Puchke’, Kolkata’s Chicken Roll, Chandni Chownk’s ‘Chole Bhature’, Purani Dili’s ‘Kachouri Subzi,’ Mysore’s Paddu, ‘Ganne ka Ras’ , and Akki Roti with Mysore Chicken Curry to Indonesian Chicken Satays, South Africa’s Bunny Chow, Mongolian Mixed Meats Grills, and Poland’s French Bread Pizza, you will find it all under one roof! ‘Jhal Muri’ which is the Kolkatta’s version of Bhel Puri was lip smackinly good. ‘Akki Roti with Mysore chicken curry’ was a wonderful combination, something which I tried for the first time. The chicken in the curry was tender and cooked to perfection. Indonesian Chicken Satays were not dry and again, it is one of my favourite street foods. South Africa’s Bunny chow needs special mention as it was a thick curry dish stuffed in a soft bun, something which I enjoyed eating apart from other dishes I had loved. There was a huge spread of desserts as well which had everything from Cakes, Ice- Creams, Halwa, Baklava etc. I personally liked a sweet dish which was a warm, not very sweet, and it was prepared using muesli. It was a perfect dish to satisfy my sugar cravings in this cold weather. However, I wasn’t a fan of their phirni which was a little less thick to my liking. However, one would have so much to choose from that it becomes a little difficult to choose what to indulge into and what to leave!

As far as my experience goes, I was definitely spoilt for choice and, I felt the quality of food was up to my expectations too. Fortune Select Excalibur is a part of the ITC chain, and the food was scrumptious and of good quality. The hotel is not only to the close proximity to Delhi, but also to the airport, and few shopping complexes along with neighbouring tourist attractions like Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, Sohna Hot Spring, and Biodiversity Park. One can easily spend a day at these tourist attractions or shoping malls, and go for a nice, delicious, relaxed meal at the Zodiac! I found the staff was courteous as well which is a quintessential aspect that cannot be ignored by me whenever I go to dine out at any restaurant.

Munchies that make me love movies even more!!!

Recently, Martini On Heels attended the launch of new range of munchies in town at INOX Junpgpura, New Delhi. It was an interesting event where few food bloggers were invited to have a taste of ‘INOX Muchos’ by the brand, and believe me when I gave it a try, every flavour was lip smackingly good! We had a small interaction with the Marketing Head, Mr Manoj Lalwani who briefed us on the brand, flavours, and their punch line- movie in the pack! I was actually, wondering about the thought behind their punch line, and in the Q&A session, I did ask him, ‘Why movie in a pack’ when they would be retailing out of the stores as well? To which, he answered that the idea is to offer an experience of watching a movie to the consumers in a pack of INOX Muchos, and that experience could be outside the cinema halls as well! Well, certainly, I couldn’t disagree on this as almost all of their flavours were simply irresistible. And, obviously in the world of movie buffs who are also foodies, there are two sorts of people- Popcorn lovers and Nachos Lovers. Trying their best to woo all the popcorn lovers, the brand has really done some brainstorming as their wide array of flavours include- Toffee & Caramel, Chipotle Chilles, Cheese & Pineaaple, and Pineapple and Green chillies! Nachos lovers wouldn’t be disappointed as INOX Muchos gave a proper thought to tickle your taste buds as well! Tomato & Bell Peppers, Cheese & Jalapeno, Piri Piri Chilli & Lemon are few wicked flavours which also come with a pack of cheese dip! I know that hits a jackpot, right? As Nachos without a cheesy dip is as incomplete as your French Fries without tomato ketchup, and with the right dip it’s the best combination which sends you straight to heaven! Health Freaks, you wouldn’t feel isolated as INOX Muchos launched their range of kettle chips just for you which are baked potato crisps in two flavours- Rock sea salt, and Cheddar & Parmesean, Basil & Orgeano and, Yes! These four ingredients are a part of just one flavour!

After stuffing our faces with these delicious muchos, we headed to the hall where we all of us together watched the latest flick ‘Dear Zindagi’ on comfortable recliners. Ofcourse, our fingers constantly, fished for those crunchy munchies in the bag of INOX Muchos that we couldn’t stop munching. I was totally into a zone of sheer relaxation and comfort! It’s just that I wouldn’t really mind some generous quantity in my bag of Inox Muchos though. So, coming to the movie experience with INOX Muchos, Yes, I know, you would want to know my review about the movie ‘Dear Zindagi’ as I have mentioned in the post! Well, it certainly, has an interesting plot which is picked up from our everyday lives. It addresses the issue of mental illness prevailing in our society, beautifully! Each one of us has gone through a situation in our lives where we were emotionally weak, and that doesn’t mean just having been through a relationship turmoil. It could be anything, and ‘Dear Zindagi’ just shows a different perception about life issues, relationship problems, and everyday concerns that we all constantly juggle with! It is definitely, your weekend watch, and to make your whole movie experience complete, go for that bag full of popcorn or Nachos from INOX Muchos, and thank me later! ☺

The Chatter House: Food Review

We all have some sort of perception about the Pub food! It is something that you have over drinks or maybe afterwards, but it can never match the standards of any fine dining restaurant! What if you find an amalgamation of the two? No, I am not saying that I found a fine dining restaurant in a pub but it is definitely above the regular food you would find in any of the pubs in our city. A modern contemporary place- The Chatter House right in the heart of Khan Market is a perfect getaway from the mundane flow of life! It brings alive the very essence of the pub culture made famous by typical European pubs, and you have a perfect place at your disposal to connect with friends over scrumptious food, and mind blowing drinks. The place is spread over two floors, with huge round windows touching the ceiling. It has an underground pub sort of a vibe with bricked walls which give the interiors a nice rustic look.

When I happened to visit The Chatter House, I was under the impression of finding some regular pub food which will be a part of the menu. But seeing their elaborate menu, l certainly couldn’t resist ordering an array of dishes. We started off with a few starters to begin with like Dahi Kebabs which were melting in the mouth and completely oil free. I wonder how they managed that because mostly wherever I have had Dahi Kebabs, they were almost drenched in oil! Next came the Toastadas which were crunchy tortillas topped with chicken, sour cream, kidney beans and salsa. Tostadas can be a perfect accompaniment to your drinks that has a crispy base and delish Mexican toppings. It looked like a thin crust pizza but it just wasn’t as heavy as any regular pizza but certainly more satisfactory to eat than a bowl of nachos. We ordered more of starters as usually we prefer small plates over elaborate main courses. Next in our list to order were the Galouti Kebabs which were again melting in the mouth, and minced perfectly to achieve that smooth texture. They were served with ulte tawe ka parantha which I wasn’t really a fan of but kebabs were cooked to perfection. We also ordered Amritsari fish which was again tender, grilled perfectly, and spices in it were balanced as well. I am a big fan of salads and their Garden in a Bowl which is a mix of seasonal vegetables and roasted almonds on a bed of smoked yoghurt and eggplant puree was refreshing and delicious. I was almost done with our starters when I spotted the blue cheese naan in their bar snacks. That caught my eye as never ever I came across any form of naan with dal makhani shots mentioned in the appetizers of any menu which urged me to order the same, and give it a shot (literally)! I certainly didn’t regret ordering that because the dish came with three bite sized naans, with their respective dal makhani shots. I loved it because otherwise one would never think of ordering dal makhani and naan in a gastro pub sort of a place. However, I feel that the taste of blue cheese in the naan was a little less to my liking. We were even impressed by their Lebanese Mezze Platter as it goes pretty well with your drinks, and kebabs were succulent enough. We hardly had any room for main course but seeing creamy polenta, we thought to give it a try as well. However, I wasn’t as impressed with it as I was by their other dishes because it was a little grainy as per my liking. Next we were served- Balls on fire: lamb dumplings simmered in tomato & chipotle sauce finished with feta and smoked chilli and I thought the meatballs were a tad dry but the sauce was really good. So, you would find a lot of choice in their menu which is a mix of Lebanese, European, Mexican and Indian. However, Indian dishes are definitely more predominant in their menu overall. There are a lot of places that I know where the Indian food is either oily or has some added orangish colour but at The Chatter House you wouldn’t find that. The dishes were almost oil free, and I was very happy to see that they were without any added artificial colours!

So, after the main course, we at Martini On Heels were quite curious to try the dessert which is the favourite part of our meal, indeed! We ordered two desserts- molten chocolate cake and apple crumble and god! How much did we love that! Cake with a gooey centre was perfectly moist and this is something that you cannot miss! Apple crumble was again warm and heavenly, and it had a little crunch which was because of the muesli that was used in its preparation. Overall, Martini On Heels would recommend this place to you as it’s an exemplary of a new urban spin of a pub culture. With its rustic interiors, cool vibe and good food, this place will certainly not let you down!

Food Love: Chicken Roulade

As complicated as it may sound, but it is a very simple recipe to whip up something interesting whenever you are bored out of your regular chicken tikkas! I know they are scrumptious, but a little change did no harm to anyone, right? So, here we go.

Ingredients

  • 3-4 skinless chicken breasts , pounded to ½ inch thickness
  • 4-5 pieces of sundried tomatoes
  • Feta cheese (if you are looking for healthy option) or
  • Mozzarella
  • 4-5 pieces of green olives (remove the pits)
  • Olive oil
  • 4-5 cloves of garlic
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Dried Oregano
  • Coriander to garnish
  • Cream
  • Vegetables- Zucchini, Mushroom, and corn ( number of veggies is optional as you can use any or just one vegetable out of these as per your liking)

Process

  1. Marinate the chicken for minimum 2 hours in olive oil, salt, pepper and garlic (crushed )
  2. Pre heat the oven at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes
  3. In the meanwhile, prepare the stuffing of the roulade by finely chopping sundried tomatoes, olives, and crumbling feta cheese or mozzarella. Mix all together in a bowl, add some dried oregano and keep it aside
  4. Prep the chicken by nicely placing the chicken breast fillets so that you can now evenly fill the mixture in all the four fillets
  5. Once you have done that you are now supposed to roll the chicken breast fillet like you would roll a carpet and tie it with a cooking string or a pure cotton white thread, divided equally in three parts so that your filling doesn’t come out and the roulade stays intact
  6. Coat the oven tray with a thin layer of olive oil so that the roulade doesn’t stick while cooking, and now place it in the oven and let it cook in the oven for 20-25 minutes. You don’t want to over cook the chicken so please keep a close eye
  7. Once its brown from outside and simmering from inside, take a non stick pan and with a drizzle of olive oil just sear it until its rendered crisp and brown (not more than 2-3 minutes)
  8. Take the pan off the heat, let the chicken rest in a separate bowl and in the meanwhile, you can prepare your sauce
  9. Take the same pan in which you have seared the chicken now throw in your diced vegetables- Zucchini, Mushroom, and corn along with salt, pepper and some chilli powder and a squeeze of lemon.
  10. After you have sautéed your vegetables, put 3 table spoons of cream along with two table spoons of water. Stir it well. Your sauce is done
  11. Now go back to the chicken that has been resting and very gently, pull out the cooking string so that you can evenly cut three pieces
  12. Serve the roulade on the bed of your vegetables in a creamy vegetable sauce and garnish it with fresh coriander
